Transcriptional regulation of IFN-λ genes in hepatitis C virus-infected hepatocytes via IRF-3-IRF-7-NF-κB complex

Abstract

Background: IFN-λ gene induction in hepatitis C virus infected hepatocytes is not well defined. Results: IRF-3, IRF-7, and NF-κB transcribe type III IFNs. Treatment with IFN-λ reduced HCV RNA and miR122. Conclusion: IFN-λ gene regulation in HCV-infected hepatocytes is similar to immune cells. IFN-λ may exert antiviral activity by down-regulating miR122. Significance: Hepatocytes can produce IFN-λ, which may be effective against hepatitis C virus.
