Dr. Seung-June Oh currently holds the position of Professor of Urology at Seoul National University (SNU) College of Medicine in Seoul, South Korea. Additionally, he is a full-time faculty member of the Department of Urology at Seoul National University Hospital (SNUH), where he specializes in Lower Urinary Tract Dysfunction and Genitourinary Reconstructive Surgery.
Dr. Oh has been interested in lower urinary tract dysfunction since his residency. He conducted clinical research on postoperative urinary dysfunctions in rectal cancer patients. He earned his master’s degree at SNU College of Medicine through his research on “The Effect of Intravesical Oxybutynin Instillation in Experimental Rat” using in vivo cystometry. During his research fellowship at SNUH between 1997 and 1999 under the supervision of Prof. Hwang Choi, he was extensively involved in basic physiological research of bladder smooth muscles using an organ bath system for two years to obtain his PhD degree on the topic of ‘Contractile Properties of Adult and Neonatal Bladder Smooth Muscle’ as a result.
In 1999, Dr. Oh relocated to Asan Medical Center in Seoul as a Clinical Fellow. Under the guidance of Prof. Taehan Park, he received extensive clinical training in the area of endourology. In 2000, Dr. Oh returned to SNU College of Medicine and SNUH where he was appointed as an Assistant Professor of Urology with a subspecialty in Neurourology and Endourology. Dr. Oh was the first to specialize in lower urinary tract dysfunction at his institution. Additionally, he has been involved in endoscopic stone surgery, including percutaneous nephrolithotripsy and ureteroscopic lithotripsy.
Dr. Oh went to the United States in 2003 and became a Fellow of Prof. Edward J. McGuire at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, MI. During his two-year fellowship, he received a grant in 2004 from the Paralyzed Veterans of America to create an educational module focused on evaluating and managing urologic complications of neurogenic bladder for healthcare providers. Upon his return to SNUH in 2005, Dr. Oh enhanced the fluoroscopic urodynamic study (UDS) system at his institution and established the Clean Intermittent Catheterization Education Center to offer comprehensive care for neurogenic bladder patients. He also developed the SNUH UDS Database Registry System, which annually encompasses over 1,000 UDS cases and has become the basis for developing various artificial intelligence algorithms using big data. In 2008, Dr. Oh initiated an annual nationwide educational program called the 'Intensive Course on UDS Interpretation' to train residents and medical professionals in Korea.
In 2008, Dr. Oh pioneered the Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP) procedure for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in South Korea. Highly experienced in endourological stone surgeries, he gradually established his own sphincter-saving (Early Inverted V-shaped Apical Mucosal Incision, EVAMI) HoLEP techniques, and disseminated his technique to domestic and international university hospitals through literature and surgical demonstrations. As the clinical volume of laser surgery for BPH increased due to his national reputation for BPH surgical technique with a very low rate of postoperative complications, his subspecialty gradually moved more towards BPH. He has performed more than 3,000 cases of HoLEP procedures since 2008. He also continued his practice in the area of neurogenic bladder and complex lower urinary tract dysfunction. He was promoted to tenure Professor in 2010.
In addition to his clinical practice, he has been in charge of research and development (R&D) of medical devices at SNUH since 2013. In 2013, Dr. Oh took on the position of Chief of the Medical Device Clinical Trials Center, a formal organization that was later expanded and reorganized as the Medical Device Innovation Center, responsible for the R&D on medical devices at SNUH. He held symposiums and seminars on various medical device development-related topics, encouraging clinicians to actively collaborate among engineers, clinicians, government, and medical device industries through translational research or clinical trials of medical devices. He has also played a significant role as a consultant to the Korean government for the development of the national medical device industry. In 2015, he won a national project to create the Medical Device Usability Testing Center in the SNUH, the very first medical device usability test center in Korea. He received the Prime Minister's Award in 2019 for his contribution to the domestic medical device industries by actively mediating between the government, industry, academia, and research institutes.
Dr. Oh is a member of several professional organizations, including the International Continence Society, American Urological Association, and Society of Urodynamics, Female Pelvic Medicine, and Urogenital Reconstruction. He served as the President of the Korean Continence Society for two years between January 2016 and December 2017. In 2017, he also served as the President of the Pan-Pacific Continence Society, which covers the representative formal academic Continence Societies of Korea, Japan, Taiwan, China, Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia, and Hong Kong. From 2022 to 2023, he was the President of the Korean Spinal Cord Society, a multidisciplinary academic society related to spinal cord injury care.
Over the last 30 years, Dr. Oh has authored or co-authored over 250 peer-reviewed papers and contributed to 33 book chapters, including the chapter on ‘Pubovagical Sling’ in the 9th edition of Campbell-Walsh’s Urology textbook as the first author. He has also been the principal investigator (PI) in around 130 research projects funded by the government or industries. His main areas of interest include BPH, overactive bladder, and neuropathic lower urinary tract dysfunction. He is particularly interested in researching the urodynamic aspect of bladder outflow obstruction associated with BPH, as well as the HoLEP procedure for BPH. Dr. Oh is still actively involved in research. Out of his 250 papers, he has authored 137 papers as the first author or PI. He has also published 32 papers on HoLEP, establishing himself as a leading clinician in this field.
